Hello! Tipping is a custom which gives Japanese some trouble. All you have to do is remember to leave 15% of your total bill. Today I would like to give you some expressions to use when you give a tip.

チップという習慣は日本人にとって楽なことじゃないと思います。

料金の１５％を計算してチップに残しておけば困ることはないです。

そのチップを上げる時に使える表現を紹介したいと思います。

Sentence 1: Here you go.

センテンス１：　どうぞ。

Sentence 2: Keep the change.

センテンス２：　お釣は結構です。

Sentence 3: This is for your trouble.

センテンス３：　ご面倒をお掛けしたので、とっておいてください。

Sentence 1 may seem like an easy expression, but it is easy to forget. Use Sentence 2 when you are giving someone a bill such as a $20 bill and your total is less than that but you want the service person to keep the change as a tip. Sentence 3 is used when a service person does something above and beyond the normal responsibilities of his or her job. For example, a friend of mine left her wallet at a sales counter in a department store and the store called her at home the same day to let her know. In that case she should probably give the salesperson who called her a substantial tip and thank him or her for going to the trouble of calling right away.

センテンス１は簡単そうに見えるんですが、忘れやすいと思います。

センテンス２はチップ含めて払う時にサービス業の人に

そのつもりを知らせるための表現になります。

サービス業の人が自分の仕事の上特別なサービスを

していただいた時にチップを上げて、

センテンス３を使えばいいと思います。

例えば、最近私の友達がデパートのカウンターで財布を忘れて、

当日その店員から電話をいただきました。

その場合に、アメリカでは、

その店員さんにチップを上げてお礼の言葉を言うのが常識だと思います。
