Hello from Tokyo! I am going to write to you about an experience I had in San Francisco. I tried to withdraw money from an ATM and the machine only gave me $40 instead of the $80 I requested. So, I had to call the company for service. Therefore, I would like to give you some expressions to tell people that something is broken. Here they are!

サンフランシスコの旅行の間の経験について書きたいと思います。

あるATMで米ドル８０ドルを下ろそうとしたら、４０ドルしか出て来ませんでした。

それからそのATMを管理している会社に電話をしました。

今日は、だれかに物が壊れているを伝えるための表現を紹介します。

Sentence 1: Excuse me, but I think the ATM is broken.

センテンス１：　すみませんが、このATMが壊れていると思います。

Sentence 2: The pay phone in the lobby does not work.

センテンス２：　ロビーにある公衆電話が壊れています。

Sentence 3: The subway ticket machine is out-of-service.

センテンス３：　地下鉄の切符販売機が壊れています。

I would like to focus on the expression “out-of-service” in Sentence 3 since I have seen this used incorrectly in Japan. “Out-of-service” can only be used for a machine that is available to the public for use such as a public pay phone or a vending machine. It cannot be used for anything in a hotel room since those things are not available to the general public.

センテンス３にある「out-of-service」と言う表現にフォーカスしたいと思います。

この表現が間違って使われているのを日本でよく見たことあります。

この表現は公衆に使える物にしか使えないです。

ホテルルームの中の物に使えないというのはそういう物はホテルのお客さんしか使えない物になりますから。
