Hello! Recently, I was thinking that it can be difficult to keep a conversation going with someone who you meet for the first time. In those cases there are some general questions you can ask people about what they do in their free time. Let me give you some examples.

こんにちは！

初めて会う人とはなかなか会話を持ち運ぶことが難しいと思います。

その時にいくつかの表現を使えば、人の暇な時間の過ごし方について聞くことがお勧めです。

では、今日の表現を紹介しましょう！

Sentence 1: What do you do in your free time?

センテンス１：　暇な時間は何をしていますか？

Sentence 2: How do you like to kill time?

センテンス２：　時間はどういうふうに潰すのが好きですか？

Sentence 3: How do you spend Sunday afternoons?

センテンス３：　日曜日の昼は大体どういうふうに過ごしていますか？

Sentence 1 may seem very easy at first, but I think that the use of the preposition “in” here is not so easy for Japanese speakers of English. In Sentence 2 there is a good example of an idiom in that we use the verb “kill” to mean finding something to do when there is nothing that you have to do. In Sentence 3 the verb “spend” is the basic expression for talking about how people use time. You can ask about someone’s habits by putting the time in the plural like the noun “afternoons” here. Notice that “Sunday” does not become plural in this case. So, I hope these expressions make you a better conversationalist. Try them and see how it goes!

最初に見るとセンテンス１は簡単に見えるかもしれませんが、

日本人にとってこの前置詞の「in」の使い方は結構難しいと思います。

センテンス２のイディオムの「kill」というのはここで時間を「潰す」という意味になります。

時間を「過ごす」という意味で英語では大体「spend」という動詞を使います。

だれかの習慣的な行動について聞くのに、複数形を使えばいいです。

例えば、ここで「昼」の「afternoon」を複数にします。

日曜日は複数にならないことに注目してください。
