Hello! In the next few lessons I would like to teach you some expressions for specific situations you might find yourself in if you live in a foreign country. Today let’s talk about conversations you might have at a hardware store such as a Home Depot in the US. Today I will present the questions you might ask.

今日はホームデポみたいな金物屋さんで使う会話を紹介したいです。

Sentence 1: I’m looking for a box of half-inch nails. 　

センテンス１：　箱に入ったくぎを探しています。

Sentence 2: I need some plain white wallpaper.

センテンス２：　ガラのない白いウォールペーパーが欲しいんですが・・・

Sentence 3: Do you have any planters for flowers?

センテンス３：　お花のための長い箱はないでしょうか？

It may be confusing, but in the US you will have to use the American system for measurements instead of the metric system when asking for something like nails. In Sentence 2 the word “plain” means that something does not have any pattern on it. Finally, a “planter” is like a long box which you can place several plants in and hang from a windowsill or place on the ground.

なれないと混乱するかもしれませんが、アメリカの寸法システムを使わなければならないので、くぎの長さもインチで言うことになります。

センテンス２の「plain」というのは「柄のない」という意味です。

センテンス３の「planter」というのは細長いボックスで花を置くためのガーデニング道具とのことで、窓や地面などいろいろな置き方が出来ます。
