Hello! Recently, we have been doing some lessons regarding travel, but this time I would like to focus on social occasions. So, today I would like to tell you what you can talk about over a formal business dinner. Typically, the most common topic is food, so let’s listen to some expressions related to that.

最近は旅行についての表現を勉強しましたが、

今回はパーティーの時に使える表現を紹介したいと思います。

ビジネスの接待の時にはどういうことについて話したらいいでしょうか？

見当は付くと思いますが、食べ物はよく出る話題ですので、

そのための表現を聞いてみましょう！

Sentence 1: This risotto is really nice.　

センテンス１：　このリゾットはとってもいいね。

Sentence 2: What do you think is in this?　

センテンス２：　この料理に何が入っているでしょうか？

Sentence 3: This is one of the best pizzas I have ever had.

センテンス３：　これは今まで食べたピザの中で一番美味しいかもしれません。

Many expressions in Japanese are formalized and there is not much variation, but I would like to encourage you to avoid overusing words such as “delicious” in describing food. Americans tend to value an ability to express feelings in a creative or unique way. So, using an adjective like “nice” in Sentence 1 can accomplish this. A fun game you can play at the dinner table is to guess what is in a dish by asking Sentence 2. Finally, especially if you are taken out to dinner, it is a good idea to thank your host for the experience by saying an expression like Sentence 3 even if it is not really true. This is a great way to express thanks rather than simply saying, “Thank you.”

日本語の会話の中で決まり文句は多いです。

しかし、英語ではもっと豊かな表現力を育ったほうがいいと思います。

アメリカ人は結構ユニークで想像的な表現を使おうとします。

センテンス１で形容詞の「nice」を使えばグッドだと思います。

食事を楽しむためにセンテンス２の質問を使ってみてください。

特にご馳走になる時はおごってくれる人に礼をいわないといけないのです。

「Thank you」の代わりにセンテンス３みたいな表現を使ったらどうですか？

本当じゃなくても、おごってくれる人は喜ぶと思います。
